Nuts & Seeds set to shine as FDA updates ‘healthy’ claim

Regulatory Update
Austrade Inc.

The FDA’s recent update to its definition of the ‘healthy’ nutrient content claim now includes both nuts and seeds. This single act simplifies the process for consumers to identify healthier choices while grocery shopping. As a result, food and beverage brands have a significant new labeling opportunity to leverage.

Long known for protein and fiber content, healthy fats, and phytonutrients, nuts have carried a qualified health claim since 2003. Now, seeds also receive recognition as healthy. These changes allow both items to appear on labels accordingly — provided the finished end product meets regulatory criteria.

The current 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines already encourage the consumption of nuts and seeds, and updated 2025 guidelines are currently in development. Once published, products containing nuts and seeds can expect to gain even more consumer attention.

A Growing Trend Toward Nuts, Seeds & Whole Foods

The growing trend of minimally processed, whole foods shows no signs of slowing down. Companies are increasingly opting to incorporate more nuts and seeds into their products and highlighting their various nutritional benefits. In addition to providing essential nutrients that contribute to heart health, nuts and seeds offer a wide range of versatility across food and beverage applications.

Consider gluten-free doughs and breads such as protein pumpkin bread or a plant-based sunflower protein burger. Moreover, a wide range of decadent, sweeter treats will also benefit from the updated ‘healthy’ nutrient content claim — from heart-healthy cashew flour cookies to almond milk protein shakes that detail phytonutrient content and mineral trace counts.

While challenges like preserving freshness remain, the inclusion of nuts and seeds in foodservice and packaged products is rapidly expanding. This reflects a broader shift toward more nutritious, plant-based food options that carry a healthy product claim.
